WHEN DO I NEED AN EYE EXAM?

Infants and Toddlers (Birth to 24 months) – Infants and toddlers should undergo their first eye examination between the ages of 6 and 9 months.

Preschool Children (2 to 5 years) – Preschool children should undergo at least one eye examination between the ages of 2 and 5 years.

School Age Children (6 to 19 years) – School children aged 6 to 19 years should undergo an eye examination annually.

Adults (20 to 39 years) – Adults aged 20 to 39 years should undergo an eye examination every 1 to 2 years.

Adults (40 to 64 years) – Adults aged 40 to 64 years should undergo an eye examination every 1 to 2 years.

Adults (65 years or older) – Adults aged 65 years or older should undergo an eye examination annually.
An annual examination of your eyes and surrounding tissues is important not only to maintain vision but also for the detection and prevention of ocular disease. In many circumstances, a visit to your local optometrist under noticeable deterioration of vision may be too late. It is highly advised to visit your eye doctor regularly to rule out the possibility of silent disorders as some of the leading causes of blindness can be completely asymptomatic.
These include: Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Amblyopia or Lazy Eyes, Glaucoma, Diabetes or even tumors.
Annual eye exams are essential to ensure your ocular health isn’t affected by eye diseases, such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Most patients would not be aware of such diseases until they experience significant vision loss.

Optometric vision therapy is a treatment plan used to correct or improve specific dysfunctions of the vision system including learning-related vision problems and brain injury recovery.

Sudden loss of vision, foreign body in your eye, sudden eye pain, red/irritated eye, chemical exposure or any other visual concerns

Regular eye exams allow the detection and management of ocular diseases.
Please note that it is up to the Examining Doctor to diagnose and under certain circumstances, proof of medication or a letter from your physician may be required to obtain OHIP coverage for your examination.

All OHIP eye examinations are subject to a $30.00 retinal imaging not covered by OHIP. It is covered by third party insurance.
